ORGANIZING INFORMATION: MAKING CATEGORIES

New Words:
Organizing: Putting similar things together.
Category: A group of similar things.
Label: The title of our category: What all the things in a category have in common.

Here is one list of mixed-up words that we organized: blue, snow, truck, red, car, rain, train, sunny, green

Colors
Blue
Red
Green
Vehicles
Truck
Car
Train
Weather
Snow
Rain
Sunny

We organized the words into three categories. The labels of the categories are: Colors, Vehicles, and Weather.

MAKING PARAGRAPHS:

A paragraph is a group of sentences that are talking about the same thing. This week we practiced taking a collection of mixed-up sentences and organizing them. We put them into categories. Each category was a group of sentences that were about a similar topic, so those sentences could be in the same paragraph.

We practiced EDITING stories that needed to be divided up into paragraphs. Every time the story stopped talking about one thing, and started talking about something else, we made a mark for a new paragraph.

To CAPITALIZE or Not to Capitalize... That is the Question!

When does a word start with a capital letter? Here are the "categories" (that we came up with) of words that start with a capital letter:

  • Name of person
  • Name of streets
  • Towns and cities
  • State
  • Countries
  • Continents
  • Planets
  • Name of parks
  • Name of forests and mountains
  • Name of oceans, rivers, and lakes
  • Name of stores, banks, & churches
  • Months and days
  • Title of book
  • Title of song, TV show or movie
  • Kind of car or bike
  • Name of restaurant
  • Name of schools
  • Name of football and baseball teams
  • Name of characters

One pattern goes down the columns, and one goes across the rows. Can you figure out what they are?

MATH DETECTIVES PROBLEM OF THE WEEK

The 23 scouts of Camp Linus are going on a field trip to Camp Snoopy. 7 adults are going also. If each car can take 5 people, how many cars need to go?

The Night I Followed the Dog by Nina Laden

It's 10 p.m. Do you know where your dog is?"

During one of our Morning Meetings this week, we read The Night I Followed the Dog.

When a boy wakes up earlier than usual one morning and happens to see his dog stepping out of a limousine, he begins to wonder what his dog does at night. So one night he follows his dog.

It turns out that his dog owns The Doghouse in town - a club for dogs, a place where they can go to relax, talk about their problems with the mailman, and eat biscuits without having to first roll over…a "place where dogs can be dogs."

The words of the story are handwritten, and many of them depict their meaning. The words "roll over" have rolled over. The word "hungry" has bites taken out of the letters. The word "sit" is resting on a chair. A very fun book.

Writing Workshop Step 1: BRAINSTORMING AND PRE-WRITING

How does an author know what to write, and how does he/she begin?

This week, we practiced "brainstorming" things that we like to read, are interested in, know about, or like to do. We took five minutes with a blank piece of paper to jot down whatever came to mind.

Once we pick something to write about, we get our thoughts organized. We have found these "Graphic Organizers" to be helpful:

GRAPHIC ORGANIZER PURPOSE
Character Webs For describing a character
Timelines For our autobiography - telling a story about one's life
Story Maps To list the setting and characters, the problem and solution, and 3 sequential events in the story
Story Plans To list the 5 W's of the story: Who, What, When, Where, Why
