Linnaeus W. West Elementary School

Endicott, NY 13760

Dear President Bush,

We are the third grade scouts of Camp Linus at Linnaeus W. West Elementary School in Endicott, NY.

We want to tell you about earning our Citizenship Merit Badge. We had to do 10 different patriotic things. This is what we did:

  1. Draw a card to the firemen, rescue dogs, and rescue workers in NY City.

  2. Make the American Flag.

  3. Draw a picture called "I'm Proud to be an American."

  4. Bring in one dollar for the children of Afghanistan.

  5. Write and illustrate the Pledge of Allegiance.

  6. Write a Poem about FREEDOM!

  7. Come up with ways that we can MAKE A DIFFERENCE in our community and in the world.

  8. Wear Red, White, and Blue on Tuesday, October 23, 2001.

  9. Do a Community Service.

  10. Write a letter to you!

We also joined in the National Pledge of Allegiance with all the children in the country.

Some of us heard you say that there should be a merit badge for bringing in one dollar. We have been earning merit badges all year. So far, we have worked on earning merit badges for being Independent Workers, for Walking in the Hallway, for Transitions, for Attentive Listening, and for D.E.A.R. Time. "D.E.A.R. Time" means "Drop Everything and Read." We earn merit badges because our classroom is called Camp Linus and scouts earn merit badges at camp. We are reading about the Berenstain Bear Scouts and they earn merit badges also.

To make a difference, our class is going to help with:

  1. Operation Christmas Child: This is a shoebox of gifts that is sent to a child in another country who doesn't have as much as we do.

  2. Sharing Parade (giving food and school supplies for Holiday Baskets that are given to families in our town).

For community service, here are some of the different things that we have done at home:

  1. Raked the neighbor's leaves.

  2. Picked up sticks in the backyard.

  3. Washed a car.

  4. Helped shred the trash.

  5. Picked up trash in the woods.

  6. Painted grandpa's garage.

  7. Baked cookies for a neighbor.

Here are our class poems about FREEDOM:

Dear President Bush,

I am a third grade scout in Miss Camp's class from Linnaeus W. West Elementary School in Endicott, NY.

In my class we made a Freedom Poem. This is mine.

Flag of America
Relation being with friends and family
Eagle
Enjoy life
Do what you can to help
Optimistic
Mighty history

My teacher is from Alaska. She got to see black bears, brown bears, orcas, harbor seals, and even glaciers.

My teacher is lucky. I wish I lived in Alaska. My teacher is nice. My teacher is the best.

I helped first graders in gym at the Halloween Centers. The first graders did great.

My class and I drew an "I'm Proud to be an American" picture. It was a fun thing to do.

We have a Citizenship Merit Badge. We have to do ten things to earn it.

  1. We wrote a letter to you.
  2. We brought in $1 for children of Afghanistan.
  3. We wrote about FREEDOM.
  4. We wore Red, White, and Blue.
  5. We did community service.
  6. We made the American Flag.
  7. I wrote the Pledge of Allegiance.
  8. We drew a card to the Firemen and Rescue Workers in NY City.
  9. Making a Difference: Operation Christmas Child and Sharing Parade.
  10. We drew a picture of "I'm Proud to be an American."

Love, Alexis

Dear President Bush,

I'm a third grade scout at Camp Linus from Linnaeus W. West Elementary School in Endicott, NY.

Next Monday we are going to have a campfire and tell stories to each other. My dad, my mom, and my stepdad are coming. The campfire will be in our classroom. It's a fake campfire.

I'm earning my Citizenship Merit Badge in my class. My favorite thing to do for earning the badge was drawing a picture about being proud to be an American. I drew a flag and the Rocky Mountains.

Sincerely, Brennan

Dear President Bush,

I am a third grade scout at Camp Linus from Linnaeus W. West Elementary School in Endicott, NY. I want to tell you about my teacher Miss Camp. She came from Alaska. She got to see some orcas and she also made pickles from kelp.

I might be on Safety Patrol next week. People on Safety Patrol tell the kids who are running to walk. If you ask them three times, then you ask for their name or follow them to their classroom.

We are earning our Citizenship Merit Badges in class. You need 10 stickers to earn it. I have brought in the dollar for the Afghanistan kids. I made a "Proud to be an American" picture. I wrote the Pledge of Allegiance. I wore red, white, and blue on Wednesday. I wrote a poem about Freedom. I only need one more sticker to earn my badge.

Sincerely, Colin

Dear President Bush,

I am a third grade scout at Camp Linus at Linnaeus W. West Elementary School in Endicott, NY.

Our class earns merit badges like the Citizenship Merit Badge. We have to help our neighbors to pick up garbage around the street.

We have to do ten things to earn the badge. That one I wrote about is community service.

This is a Poem of Freedom:

Family will be there for you always.
Religious freedom go to any church.
Eagle the sign of freedom.
Everlasting events you can never lose.
Dare to dream.
Open your mind and learn.
Make new friends and have fun.

Dear President Bush,

I am a third grade scout at Camp Linus from Linnaeus W. West Elementary School in Endicott, NY. I drew a picture for America Pride. I drew the Statue of Liberty, the White House, and the American Flag. In art I made the American flag also. We did the National Pledge at 2:00 p.m.

We are telling family stories around a campfire.

We have three rules in our class: Be safe. Be kind. Be productive.

It was fun when we brought in $1 for the children in Afghanistan.
